FAQ

Specific Problems with Cormet Hip Resurfacing and Metal-on-Metal Components

Recently some hip manufacturers have stated that they would no longer distribute hip resurfacing system in the United States. This was at least in part due to the problematic metal design. Ever since all-metal artificial hips have been on the market, there have been serious flaws reported.

Although the original intention of the design of these Hip Resurfacing Systems was good, research has shown that metal devices shed metal particles and increase the chance that recipients could get metal poisoning. Friction of the metal parts allows cobalt and chromium metallic particles to wear off the device and enter the tissues and blood. The entire hip joint is then at risk, as loosening can occur as well as dislocation of the joint.

In 2008, one study by the Royal College of Surgeons found that out of approximately 2300 women who had hip resurfacing, four percent had to go in for revision surgery. Unfortunately, any revision surgery is harder on the patient and more difficult with less positive outcomes. Getting a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing may not be the best idea when there are other choices. The real question is – is it worth the risk?
