FAQ

Metal on metal systems. Rather than replace both the socket and ball parts of the hip, only the socket is replaced with a metal-on-metal component. The ball or top of the thigh bone is resurfaced with a metal cap.

When Would Someone Receive a Metal-on-Metal Resurfacing Hip System?

Those who have severe damage to the hip due to degenerative diseases of the joint or those who have had injury to the joint could receive this type of hip replacement. Usually the patient is someone who is relatively young and has a high activity level and thus would not qualify for traditional surgery as they would likely need revision surgery in the future.

Those who should NOT get this type of metal-on-metal hip replacement system are those who:

•    Have infection around or near the joint
•    Have severe osteoporosis (low mineral density of the bones)
•    Have poor bone strength or are immature skeletally
•    Have cysts on the head of the thigh bone
•    Have renal insufficiency
•    Are obese
•    Have metal sensitivity

Problems with some Hip Systems

Hundreds of complaints have been sent to the FDA regarding these devices. This is not particularly different than other metal-on-metal hip replacement or resurfacing systems, because it is the all-metal replacement devices that are the crux of the matter. Even though the entire replacement device may not be metal, the parts that cause the problems are metal.

What happens is that the ball-and-socket structure of the hip joint requires the ball to turn inside the socket cup. When the artificial joint is made of metal parts, they rub together constantly - when the person is walking, running, sitting down or leaning over. As the ball and cup come in contact and rub together, metal ions are released into the blood and surrounding tissues. These tiny metal particles can have bad side effects, giving the patient metal poisoning.

Metal poisoning is also known as “metallosis.” There are many potentially dangerous side effects from metallosis including:

•    Tissue death in the area of the hip
•    Nerve damage
•    Thyroid gland interference
•    Weakening of heart muscles
•    Cognitive impairment

Symptoms of a Hip Replacement Failing

There are certain things to look for to decide if a metal-on-metal hip replacement system is failing. Those who have Total Resurfacing Hip Systems should always be alert and contact their doctor if they experience the following:

•    Pain in the hip or groin
•    Difficulty walking or standing
•    Numbness
•    Swelling in the hip region
•    Loosening of the joint
•    Dislocation of the joint
•    Clicking sounds in the artificial joint
•    Infection
